Cracking Walnuts

It might not show too much on the blog, but we eat a lot of walnuts. I'm surprised we haven't lost any teeth yet, because inevitably there's always a shell mixed in. I can't complain too much, though, because I have a great source of free, already picked, walnuts.

My grandparents have walnut trees on their farm & they are always sharing them. Lucky for me, Mom & Dad pick them before they pass some on to me. :-) The contraption above is what Dad uses to crack the walnut shell before picking out the meat.

It's very easy to use & much easier for mass cracking than the hand crackers used for individual eating. Still, it's not a perfect system, so sometimes chunks of the shell find their way into the wrong pile. We always know to chew carefully when our food contains walnuts!

Walnuts grow on trees in big green balls. Inside the green ball is the hard brown shell that we're used to seeing. Once you crack the brown shell, the nut-meat inside is edible. It's amazing how the tree protects its seeds so well!

Both black & English walnuts grow the same way. English walnuts are more commonly found in stores & have a milder flavor. Black walnuts are earthier in taste & have a harder shell. Poppop grows both, but he has more black walnut trees so that's what we usually eat.

Seeds are the life line for the tree, so naturally walnuts are chock full of healthy nutrients. They're also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential to our health.

Walnuts have been proven to aid in the health of the cardiovascular system, especially the heart. Another great reason to eat walnuts is their antioxidant & anti-inflammatory properites that provide anti-cancer benefits.

The Little Things in Life

I wasn't going to do the whole New Year's resolutions & goals thing, but my love of lists won out. My focus for 2012 is on the day to day things. Every day life, little details, things that will keep me running at my best.

  1. Simplify everything so I stress less.
  2. Defrost my freezer.
  3. Eat more butternut squash, even if it does make the skin on our hands stretch in a strange way when we cut it.
  4. Spend less so I can travel more.
  5. Drink more green tea.
  6. Take time to spend outside every day. I need more fresh air!
  7. Find a fresh green juice that I love. Drink it at least once a week.
  8. Master a creamy, chocolate frosting made with coconut oil instead of butter.
  9. Lighten up a bit. Go with the flow.
  10. Practice yoga at least 3 times a week. I've been slacking in the past month or so & I can tell!
  11. Continue reading the Bible in 365 days with the Bup.

Bring it on 2012!

Dinner & a Movie

Mom called me on Saturday morning because their evening plans had fallen through.

"Do you want to go with Dad & I to Lisa's Cafe for dinner & then to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? And before you decide, we gave a gift card so dinner is our treat."

Ummm...yes, please. I was just planning an exciting evening of Charmed on Netflix.

I love the salads at Lisa's, mainly because they come with this delicious breadstick. Yum! I got the tossed salad with Sweet Vidalia Onion dressing. I usually like vinaigrettes & wasn't expecting this to be creamy, but it was good!

Mom & I split the large vegetarian stromboli. They were nice enough to split it onto 2 plates, so that's half. Holy cow that was a lot of stromboli!! It was delicious, stuffed with crisp veggies & mozerella cheese, with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. I ate the piece on the left & saved the rest for lunch.

Oh, and those brown squiggles of cheese on the top? They were SO good.

Mom also got a side of asparagus, which she shared.

The Bup got the small vegetarian stromboli for himself, & it was the same size as mine! He, of course, ate the whole thing. No surprise there!

For dessert, Mom & I split a chocolate biscotti. It didn't seem like it was baked after they sliced it like biscotti usually is, but it was still yummy. We didn't have time for coffee, so it was probably better that it was soft & didn't need to be dipped.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was intense. We saw the Swedish version about a year ago & I read the book, so nothing was really a surprise. The intro was very artistic but super bizarre. It was fun to go to the movies since we rarely go. I think the last one we saw was Harry Potter!

Did any of you see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? What did you think? Did you like the intro?
